Frequently asked questions
Do I need to book a time slot for the Rietveld Schröder House?
Yes. Every visit is by reservation in a 20-minute slot, and the museum asks for a booking even from visitors with a museum card. There are no walk-up tickets for the house itself.
How many people are in the house at once?
Each slot admits up to eight people. A new slot starts every 20 minutes, so the rooms never feel crowded, but it also means the house fills up quickly on popular days.
How far ahead can I book?
The museum releases tickets for the coming three months. If the date you want is further out, tell us and we will book it as soon as it opens.
How long does the visit take?
About 30 to 40 minutes inside, plus check-in. Arrive ten minutes before your slot, or 20 minutes early if you want to watch the short documentary at the Ticket Office first.
What time slots are there?
Slots start at 11:00, 11:20, 11:40, 12:00 and 12:20, then at 14:00, 14:20, 14:40, 15:00 and 15:20. The house closes from 13:00 to 14:00. Between May and August it also opens on Friday evenings until 21:00.
Which days is the house closed?
Every Monday, plus New Year's Day, King's Day (27 April) and Christmas Day. It opens on Easter Monday, Whit Monday and Boxing Day. A date can also be unavailable because of an event at the house.
Is there a guided tour in English?
The visit is self-guided with a multimedia tour in Dutch, English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Japanese, Mandarin and Dutch Sign Language. A member of staff upstairs shows how the sliding walls and corner window work and answers questions.
Can I use my own phone and headphones?
Yes. The player has a built-in speaker, and you can plug in your own headphones with a mini-jack. A phone version of the tour opens from a QR code at the Ticket Office, and every clip is also available as text.
Is there a ticket for teenagers and students?
Yes, two. Teenagers aged 13 to 17 book the ages 13–17 fare and bring an ID showing their age. Holders of an International Student Card book the student fare and show the card at the Ticket Office.
Do children need a ticket?
Yes, children of every age need a ticket for the slot. There are two children's fares, ages 7 to 12 and ages 0 to 6, both booked together with at least one adult; children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Can I bring a pushchair or a wheelchair?
No. The house and the Ticket Office have thresholds, the upper floor is reached only by steep stairs, and the museum says the house is not accessible for wheelchairs, prams or pushchairs. Staff help visitors who find walking difficult where they can.
Can I bring a companion if I need help during the visit?
Yes. The museum admits a companion free of charge for visitors who cannot visit independently. That companion ticket is only issued at the Ticket Office on the day, so it is not something we sell.
Can I take photos inside?
Yes, for personal use and without flash. Please don't photograph staff in a way that identifies them without asking, and don't touch anything apart from the stair banister.
How do I get there from Utrecht Centraal?
Take bus 8 towards Wilhelminapark to the De Hoogstraat stop and walk about five minutes, or cycle for about 15 minutes. The Ticket Office is to the left of the house at Prins Hendriklaan 50a.
Can I visit as a day trip from Amsterdam?
Easily. Direct trains from Amsterdam Centraal reach Utrecht Centraal in about half an hour, and the house is a short bus or bike ride from there. Pick a mid-morning or early-afternoon slot and you have time for the city too.
We are a group of more than eight. What should we do?
Book two slots in a row and split the group. One half tours the house while the other watches the documentary at the Ticket Office. We can book both slots on one order.
Who are you, and how do I receive my tickets?
We are an independent booking service, not the museum. We buy your tickets from the museum's own ticket shop in your name and email them to you. You show them at the Ticket Office on the day.
Can I change my date after booking?
Tell us as early as you can. The museum's slots are small and often full, so a change depends on there being room in another slot; we will check and come back to you by email.
